Cast Iron @ Duo Galleria - Review [Media Invite]

Cast Iron is an entirely new independent Japanese eatery at the new Duo Galleria, which is part of Duo Towers. Duo has a slew of new F&B openings located right on the first floor and we were fortunate to have a preview in its soft launch phase back in December.

It has three concepts in one - a Robata Grill menu; a Wagyu beef menu and a Japanese menu offering bar bites to sushi/sashimi to omakase. Some may term it confused, but I’d call it having varied options.

Wagyu Beef menu

Ribeye Bone-in Cut (U.S.)

The wagyu beef menu features graded beef cuts. At any one time, they have three kinds flown in on rotation. This can comfortably feed 4 if you are looking to have just beef only and not too many other sides.

It’s served in two ways: 1 side left in its original flavour, to pair with the creamy-marrow-y-smokey bone marrow butter. The other we picked to be grilled with chimichurri, though there are other sauces you can choose as well.

It boasted a charred exterior and was a beautiful medium rare within. Perhaps a wee too charred that it was slightly bitter, but we could overlook it with the superb bone marrow butter.

Grilled Meats

If beef is not your thing, they also serve grilled pork. We savoured the different cuts, from grilled Iberico pork, pork collar, pork belly ($14), iberico galbi in miso sauce ($16), iberico pork loin ($12).

My favourite was the iberico pork with its springy meat texture and a simple grilled flavour.

Sashimi Platter

*Prices are per two pieces.
Tuna Otoro $55, Yellowtail Hamachi ($16), Sardine Iwashi (market price), Sea Urchin ($55 per order), Botan Shrimp (market price)

One order has about 6 pieces (80 grams). Needless to say, every piece was fresh with sweetness. On this platter, I loved the otoro the most of course, which is the most desired part of a tuna belly with its fattiness and resulting melt-in-mouth texture.

Grilled Vegetables

These mixed grilled pieces of zucchini, sweet potato, corn and broccoli were so well-done, it wasn't a side to the meats but equally held its own. Each was crunchy/juicy, with a hint of the charred aroma. A MUST-order and i mean it.

Sides
The place also offers sides to go with drinks. Some items we sampled included the grilled stingray fin ($13), grilled fish cake ($9) and dried beancurd skin ($7). Coming for the grills/sashimi would be more worthwhile.

The quiet ambience, thanks to the newness of its building makes it a great place to consider if you are looking for somewhere with the ambience, and have looser purse strings.  Or even better, if the budget allows, dine relaxingly with the omakase and have a whole conversation with the chef with every item served.

Thanks to Cast Iron for the invite and the chefs for the great food supplemented with information. The good-looking team of chefs below.
