I Am Cafe @ Haji Lane
I AM Cafe, located right at the entrance of Haji Lane, is modeled upon cafes in the Netherlands. Note that the cafe isn't certified Halal, though the place says that it follows Halal preparation methods. It is a non-air conditioned setting, with both alfresco and inner seats.
I have walked past on a few occasions, one time even gawking at their gigantic rainbow cake slice. On the Friday night we were there, we had to queue for 40 minutes before we were allocated alfresco (i.e. by the road side) seating. The wind was strong and there was the occasional loud traffic. But otherwise, the atmosphere, with the rest of the chattering crowd around, was warm and relaxed. At one point, the cafe (staff and some patrons who joined in) even burst into a birthday song for one of the tables.
The cafe serves up a menu of hotdogs, burgers and sandwiches, apart from some finger food. They are also known for their cake slices, which are so tall that they have to be served lying flat on a sizable plate.

From the starters, the baked mussels was garlicky good. The mussels wasn't fishy, which is good. It is a starter choice worth considering.

We also picked the staff-recommended Charcoal Grilled juicy beef burger, with add-ons of an extra beef patty and turkey bacon to share. There is also a choice of chicken patty too. The result? A leaning tower of Burger. The thick beef patty could be juicier, and the turkey bacon was crispy, but a little weird in its slightly oil-less texture. Still,this was good, but I couldn't pinpoint a wow factor to it.

I must commend on the warm staff service, which made me feel right at home. Perhaps this is why the place is perpetually crowded. Having my meal, the setting and experience fitted almost perfectly in my imagination of a Netherlands cafe, well minus the cold of course. Grub-wise, it definitely makes the mark, even if it wasn't impressionable. Also, prices are very reasonable. Which is all good enough for me to return.
